Another round of volcanic eruptions in Iceland and more warnings issued yesterday! It’s not like I’m losing sleep over Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula drama. Our trip is still months away, so there’s little chance it will affect us. But it definitely is interesting to watch and see how all of this plays out.
Fiery Facts 🔥
Unlike the Eyjafjallajökull eruption that turned Europe into a no-fly zone in 2010, the Fagradalsfjall volcano near Grindavik isn’t covered with an ice cap, so even if there is a major event, experts don’t expect the same apocalyptic ash clouds.

Close Enough to Toast Marshmallows
Man, when you take a look at the map and see how close that volcano is to Keflavik International Airport (just 20 km) and the little hotel we booked (a mere 30 km away), it really hits you! You can’t help but look at the photos of the city of Keflavik with a backdrop of the night sky lit up in bright red billowing smoke and be reminded of the devastating forest fires we’ve seen here recently. Drayton Valley is over 100 km from where we live in Spruce Grove. When we’re in Iceland, though, we’ll be staying less than 1/3rd of that distance away. This volcano will practically be our neighbor.
Oh well, it wouldn’t be much of an adventure without excitement like this, would it?
