    Around Town

Knowing the noon heat  would be too hard on us, we ventured out earlier today and headed east to explore new roads in our neighbourhood.  We found many small cafes where people sat outside with coffees and sweets and some, to our amazement, drank beer. Everyday people doing everyday things! We came across a tobacco shop and decided to stock up on bus and metro tickets but the lady that worked there didn’t speak English so she yelled something to someone in the back and a nice young man came out and helped us.  Between his limited  English and our hand…

  • Life’s A Beach

    Life’s A Beach

That’s where we spent the day – at Malvarosa Beach.  I have been to many beaches in my life but never one quite like this one.  After a two subway ride, we arrived on the sun soaked beach which went on for as far as the eye could see.  High priced hotels lined a wide brick and stone walkway on one side while beautiful white sand ran about two city blocks down to the Mediterranean water. Walking in the deep sand was a challenge for our old calf muscles, so we chose the thin slatted boardwalk to make the trek to…

  • A Few More Pictures

    A Few More Pictures

Just thought I’d send a few more pictures of our home away from home.  The first picture is some “doodles” that someone did on their apartment wall.  Of course, I’d love that!  Two of the pictures are of Joey and I sitting and reading while the laundry dries.  We have a washing machine but no dryer and with the high humidity, it takes a while to get anything dry. The other pictures are just looking up and down the street and straight down to the road to show how little room there is to drive. We really are so comfortable…

  • Around Our Neighbourhood

    Around Our Neighbourhood

We  love our apartment and especially its location.  Situated Far From the “Maddening” crowd, we love that we get to experience life as it actually happens in Valencia.  Walking down our narrow street with cars parked on one side and barely enough room for another car to pass, we have to get up close and personal with the  building if we meet someone coming towards us to make room to pass.  Old ladies with their two-wheeled carts filled with groceries, people of every size and shape out walking their dogs, delivery vehicles dropping off their goods at various stores early…

  • Accidents Happen

    Accidents Happen

Joey and I are the first Canadians that our host, Josep, has had staying in his apartment rental…we may be his last.  Yesterday, we decided to go out for a bit in the morning, come home for lunch and then hang out and watch a movie at home during the heat of the day.  We re-arranged the furniture a bit as we decided to watch Netflix on my computer and had to set things up so we could both see it.  Ready to settle in, I sat in the chair that has become “mine”, leaned back, and there was a…

  • Sights and Smells

    Sights and Smells

We think we overdid it a bit today as we headed out at 8:30 this morning and didn’t get home until around 6:30.  Even though we spent most of it on a few bus rides around town, we walked a lot – yes, I got my 10,000 steps in and of course, the dreaded stairs at the end of the day. We began by taking the city bus to the Central Market which was the largest indoor market I’ve ever been to.  Hundreds of vendors sold anything from flowers to spices, candy to pastries and every part of a pig…

  • Rest and Read

    Rest and Read

Being awake at 2:30 AM I had lots of time to reminisce about our travels to get here and all the modes of transportation it took for us to make the journey.  A car ride from home led us to a ferry ride to Vancouver, a bus and train ride to the airport, a flight to Paris followed by one to Valencia and finally, the subway, before walking to our flat..a total of 30 hours on the “road”. No wonder we are exhausted today. I must tell you about our flight from Vancouver to Paris o n Air France.  Within 2…

  • We Have Arrived!

It’s been a very, very, long day but we finally arrived at our lovely flat in Valencia, Spain an hour ago – 30 hours of little sleep and well over the 10,000 steps I plan to do each day. We had many laughs along the way but they got to be fewer and fewer as we became more tired.  I was lucky to be able to sleep on the planes but Joey wasn’t so lucky.  All of our flights ran on time but sitting for 9 hours from Vancouver to Paris was hard on these old bones.  It took us…

  • On the Go Again!

Another adventure in the planning… that’s what my life is all about.  There are always  new places to be discovered, new cities to be explored and new friends to make. This time, it’s Spain and Italy that I have chosen to discover.  Spain, for the first time, with a return to Italy where, five years ago, I vowed to return.  The story begins… One day in the spring of 2015 I was contemplating my upcoming 65th birthday.  Well, upcoming in 2016 but a girl’s gotta plan things in advance, right?  I knew I wanted to return to Italy and remembered…
